playing doubles while everything gets fogged into nothingness...

london birthday full (or rather dull) moon

well, there was supposed to be a full moon in the sky somewhere tonight, but ehi, that's (partly) why we left, so all's well, I guess, getting sort of old aside...

31 December 2007

call me rudolph

stuck at home with festive cold and all for a week now, nervously sneezing my way through the house of old in one of my best incarnations ever of a christmas favourite, I looked up in the sky at a christmas full moon and back at fond memories of a year (sort of) solidly spent in my good old country, currently under (and under-standably so) heavy fire from both the yankees (here) and the brits (here and here), and concluded I'd hang around over here a tiny bit longer, if u don't mind... here's to 2008, then... hope it'll see you flying safe and sound, "little" one!;-)

19 December 2007

so this is christmas ... so what!?;-)

Wow, after I jumped it occurred to me life is perfect, life is
the best, full of magic, beauty, opportunity... and television...
and surprises, lots of surprises, yeah... and then there's the best stuff,
of course, better than anything anyone ever made up, 'cause it's real...

Jeremy Davies (alias Tom Tom),
from "The Million Dollar Hotel", Wim Wenders, 2000

For those who know what I'm talking about up here, that's a quick summary of (the best of) my 2007, for the worst you'll have to find it out by yourself, if you can bother, but I'd never spoil the festivities by grumbling about the immensity of life, would I!?;-)

Particularly warm greetings to Marco y Rosaria from La Laguna (ES), Sergio from Madrid, Carlo from Vancouver, Odysseas from Roma, Dani y Olga from Tonantzintla (MX), Daniela from Madrid, Emma from Malmoe, Jeff from Socorro (NM-US), who provided a bed, a couch, a floor or something for me to lay my tired astro-traveler's self during the past year, and to all those who nicely offered some hospitality but to whose offers I couldn't oblige for a number of reasons (this is not to say I didn't try, and you know it!;-)

Not without some fondness I think about Markos & Myrto, Carlo & Simo, who've been and still are writing up like crazy (you'll be alright folks!), Gabriele & Lucia who'll be joining the group's daily grind (well, I told you not to!;-) and Padova's "astrosocials" for the good times.

Finally, let me raise a toast: to all of you, "may you always be courageous", and to my bittersweet home country, for everything under its fiery sun and for everything we must ask of ourselves in order to make it a better place to live and work.

It was all, as I was warned at the very outset, one "bel casino".
And standing there, drenched by the rain, I realised that I didn't
want to live, couldn't even imagine living, anywhere else.

Autumn Campaign

My astro-traveler's autumn campaign comes to an abrupt end with my landing in Venezia, after a rather lively month spent between Scandinavia and the US.

An interesting oh-so-northern-european appetizer kicked things off in Stockholm, where while not quite losing my underwear as Dr J reportedly did over the summer it was nice and all, with Old Town dining and catching up with colleagues and projects from all over the place. And then it was down "south", on the evening train to lovely Malmoe to (barely) catch up with sweetest Emma, and finally, across the channel through the tunnel I had seen being built, I finally got back to Copenhagen, where it all got started oh-so-long ago, and back to Erik & Aase's place, talking (non-)religion and (mostly) science with long-forgotten passion.

The US of A greeted me with my first "Smallville" episode and said goodbye with a frantic search for a few Doritos bags throughout LAX. In the meantime, sparse and unrepresentative bits from the south-western US campaign have included:
  • warming up while sitting at the tables by Chandler's canteen at lunchtime
  • catching up with lovely Stella and her (admittedly unnerving!;-) science drive
  • Socorro's Capital bar (aka *the* bar of Socorro!:-)
  • Thanxgiving at an Holiday Inn in El Paso with Dr Wagg
  • walking along the peace-sign-shaped VLA
  • watching the snow storming Albuquerque from atop the Plaza Inn
  • disturbing thoughts & dreams brought along by Chris/Alex/Sean/Eddie & their Into The Wild
  • finally discovering where the Huntington is on a sun-kissed saturday afternoon jog
And when the jogging finally took me into San Marino city limits on a cloudy saturday night and on the fences I started seeing post-thanxgiving Christmas decorations, I realized it was time to go back where Christmas comes from, or sort of, anyway.

Throughout, my listening mostly to sweet and moody soundtracks admittedly hasn't done me much good, but the cinema and the jogging (not to speak about the science... oh, and the book-shopping of course!;-) have been great!;-)

985 California East

Ricordini Messicani

- magliette dipinte a mano con su rettili vari a San Cristobal (a new spin on an old classic - voto 8)

Un caro pensiero va alla festosa brigata British Airways / Delta Airlines / AeroMexico / Air France per una serie di "interessanti" esperienze di volo e di attesa dei bagagli, ma soprattutto a Dani y Olga, latest but hopefully not the last of the adorable astro-couples looking after me around this crazy world... c u soon in Padova, folks!;-)

Latest From Your Bus Seat #13 Road Warrior

On his way back from hurricane-swept Yucatan your dearest Mattia today was stopping over in Oaxaca (City). Originally a little annoyed by his not having found the guts to gulp down an extra 12 hr bus trip which would have taken him to the Southern Mexican Pacific Coast and fabled Mazunte, he was positively and pleasantly surprised by the charm of the city, its fancily colourful arts galleries and its slow ways. As soon as he jumped off the night bus from San Cristobal and his de riguer seat #13 (which appears to be the *only* free window seat on *any* Mexican bus, leading to the conclusion that not only people here, including tourists, are superstitious indeed, but also that, as he's often suspected, 13 is the more likely Answer to the Ultimate Question, rather than the 42 honoured by tradition), as he was regaining his legendary composure after the crazy bus driving so costumary here, he couldn't help noticing "little differences". For Oaxaca is the first place he meets along his path where one is not invariably approached by children with wide eyes moaning "un peeesooo..." or by the more hardened merchandise street sellers, bur rather first looked at suspiciously as someone not belonging and then quickly smiled at when one cracks a smile himself. Tourists do not belong *that* much in Oaxaca, and after a quick adjustment that feels good. Oaxaca is one of those places where, as u r feverishly reading the last pages of your favourite summer 2007 book on the church steps, you can meet sweetest wide-eyed Beth who wants to talk some english (or possibly chat me up, as the case might be, but those who've been following me closely surely know better!;-) and reminds you of that little something u've lost about two years ago these days and which doesn't seem to be coming back anytime soon. Oaxaca is a place where the neighbourhood echoes with folk-hip-hop music a' la 99 Posse (or rather Molotov really) rather than the ever-present techno-like crap of Yucatecan tourist traps. It's a good place, much like more touristy San Cristobal but with more character, feels like a good place to conclude this small trip of mine. And as for you, little one, I guess "I'll meet you further on up the road", sigh...

mexican working nights (for the prospective speaker is not less confused that the galaxy surveys he's planning)

the walls are closing in on tomorrow morning's speaker, who characteriscally had too much too drink and who therefore, in the comfort of his room, cannot come up with the ultimate humorous slide to end his talk on a high note... and while almost thoughtlessly erasing unfortunate never-sent sms drafts, uncomfortable images of John Cusack somehow resurface, not without the odd image and line straight from some The Cure video or other... but don't you get him wrong, "most of the time, I don't even care, if i ever see her again", still the farther he flies the less doubt he has as to what would have been "right"... but then again, if only his luggage were found, the rainy nights here perhaps wouldn't feel so cold...

Don't u hate it when people tell u about their long and tiring trips?;-)

Mexico, u'd better be worthwhile!;-) Time for a nap, folks, too bad the birds are singing and a Mexican full-ish moon is waning...

pronti ... via!

Sooo much time...).

"And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time", assieme alla tua reticenza di fronte al farne, di piani, e alla tua dubbia sensazione di avere qualcosa da scrivere, piuttosto che reagire a certi "blocchi" creativi come i Pink Floyd dei bei tempi, cioe' con un lungo e doloroso concept album, come giustamente osservava Tommaso... tempted to switch off, here and now, for life is larger than the largest text editor window, and the sun is brighter than the brightest screen...

05 May 2007

early bird anybody!?

Alpine Full Moon

And a peaceful full Moon finally pierced through the clouds and shone on me, as I dizzily got out of the "refreshments & entertainment" building, and as some dancing green(ish!?) eyes kept on partying I was suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of this whole thing, of my looking hopefully without being seen, of my sudden playing table football on my own, in the dark, wishing I was somebody else, at some other time in some other place... but that's all there is, or so I'm told, and as I look at my admittedly cute but slightly drunk reflection in the window I wonder where all of this is going to lead, and I pray the God of little things to help me out, for there's little I can think of, these days, peut etre 'cause I'm tired and all, but still...
